Well its officially December and the dropping temperatures (and holiday decorations) are here to prove it. This is often a very busy and stressful time of year and although this is a time to think of others, make sure to take some time to take care of your self too. It is important to take care of ourselves in order to give our best to others. Self care doesn’t need to be physical. It is just as rewarding and important to take care of the mental and spiritual aspects of ourselves.

We would all love to have a few hours in the day to get a massage, go to the gym, yoga studio, meditate, or have coffee with a close friend or loved one, but we work, we have kids, holidays, and other commitments that can take up most of our time and energy. Self Care doesn’t have to take a long time or cost you any money. By taking advantage of those 5 minutes you have here and there you can sneak in a decent amount of self care throughout your day.

We may not all have time to go a yoga class or get a massage every day, but there are many quick and easy ways for self-care:

-Spend 5 minutes doing a few sun salutations in the morning.

-Stare out the window while you sip your first cup of coffee and wonder what that squirrel is up to.

-Meditate and do a few breathing exercises as you wait in line.

-before you get out of bed in the morning, spend a minute thinking about something you are grateful for.

-get yourself a tennis ball and place it behind you back on a wall and roll it around on a sore muscle

-cuddle time with your favorite pet. A wag of a tail, lick on the nose, or a nice purr can do wonders for your mood.

– do 10 or 20 push-ups using your kitchen counter. With your feet on the floor put your hands on the edge of the counter and get a few reps in while you wait for something to cook.

The list can go on and on. Get creative with it. Then when you do have more time to spend make sure to take advantage of it. We all need a massage every once in a while and often an hour at the gym or yoga studio is like going to therapy at the same time.
